From the first day I met the kids at Surfshack I fell in love!  I was constantly involved and loving life!!!  The kids are amazing and the Surfshack crew does whatever they can to help you feel at home and a part of the family, a great family that they are!  The kids taught me more than I could ever have imagined in my six months as a volunteer.  I learned to take everyday as it comes and make the best of it.  Every second with them was special.  I enjoyed seeing the kids grow from day to day, into kind, loving, responsible young adults.  One of my favorite parts of volunteering was helping the kids study everyday after school and one of my favorite memories comes from this.  On the last day of the kids school year in December, I was waiting for the kids outside of the school, all of the kids had gotten their report cards that day.  One of the kids came running to me, screaming my name. He had just found out he had passed the fifth grade and wanted to thank me for all of my help!  We jumped around for minutes in excitement, but I was very humbled by this experience.  At that moment I realized that I had helped a child achieve one of their goals, I have never been more proud.  The program is the best thing for the kids, without it, it is unknown where some of these kids may be.  I feel blessed everyday to have been a part of such a wonderful program and I think of Surfshack Surfschool Outreach kids everyday, be it when I see one of their notes or just think of them.  I cannot wait to return to such an amazing program and see how they have grown.  These kids stole a piece of my heart and I am forever grateful for the experience I had!
